In this section I want to share with you some activities to apply reading with your students.

Beginning

  • Recognize personal information, words in print.

1. Students read a text about someone. Then, answer questions. Ex. What is his/her name? Where does s/he live?

Low beginning

  • Scan for specific information on familiar documents

2.Students read a text and find some details the teacher has asked for. Ex. A reading about a trip. Activities the person did or food the person ate.etc

3. The teacher reads a sentence from an article/book and asks students look for it in the text and say in which paragraph or line they found the sentence.

  • Read simple sentences on a familiar topic

4. Students read a text. The teacher gives pieces of paper with words related to the text and ask them to form sentences. Ex. Mountains big some are.

High beginning

  • Use prediction as a reading strategy

5. Show a picture related to the text students are going to read, ask them for predictions. Ex. The text is about a place, ask to students Do you think is that a good place to spend holiday? Do you think is good to practice some sports? In this way students get engaged with the reading.

Low intermediate

  • Recognize most standard words on a personal information form.

6. Fill in blanks in a text: Give students a text with missing words, they have to complete trying to make sense. When they finish if they do not have the correct answers give the first letter of each missing word. Then, the ending letter. Finally give the answers.

High intermediate

  • Story talk

7. Talking about what you read is another way to help students develop language and thinking skills. You won't need to plan the talk, discuss every story, or expect an answer.

Read slowly and pause occasionally to think aloud about a story. You can say: "I wonder what's going to happen next!" Or ask a question: "Do you know what a palace is?" Or point out: "Look where the little mouse is now."Answer your students' questions, and if you think they don't understand something, stop and ask them. Don't worry if you break into the flow of a story to make something clear. But keep the story flowing as smooth as possible.Talking about stories they read helps students develop their vocabulary.

  • Look for books.

8. The main thing is to find books you both love. They will shape your students' first impression of the world of reading.

Keep in mind that your students' reading level and listening level are different. When you read easy books, beginning readers will soon be reading along with you. When you read more advanced books, you instill a love of stories, and you build the motivation that transforms children into lifelong readers.

  • Read to me

9. It's important to read to your students, but equally important to listen to them read to you. Students thrive on having someone appreciate their developing skills.

Take turns. You read a paragraph and have your students read the next one or you read half the page and your students read the other half. As your student becomes more at ease with reading aloud, take turns reading a full page. Keep in mind that your student may be focusing more on how to read the words than what they mean, and your reading helps to keep the story alive.

  • What's in the news?

10. Newspapers are a form of daily communication with the outside and inside of a country, it provides lots of learning activities for students.
