Listening is important to communicate effectively and when teaching a new language even more. Here some activities.
Beginning
Respond to very simple questions in familiar contexts.
The teacher organizes the class in 2 teams and asks them to make questions to know personal information if someone from 1 team does not answer correctly, loses a point in the end the winner is who got the most points(Correct questions and answers ).
Follow simple one-step directions
2. This can be trough songs or games like Simon says. This kind of activities is perfect for children.
3. Uses of imperatives. Clap your hands! Open your books!
Low beginning
Follow one- step directions in a familiar context to complete a simple task
4. Pick up a word: The teacher reads a story and ask to students write words that she mentions the most. (More than 3 times).
High beginning
Listen for key vocabulary
5. The teacher organizes students in pairs and gives them a story with missing words. Student A has a part of the story completed and read a loud and student B has to complete and vice versa.
Recognize common words when spelled or dictated
6. The teacher plays an audio about a specific topic. Example: Food and asks students writes what kind of food they heard.
Low intermediate
Use context clues to get main ideas and to identify details
7. Class memory quiz: The teacher asks to students interview a classmate and asks questions like: What is your favorite color? While students are interviewing the teacher is walking around the class to get some information, when the interviews have finished the teacher asks some questions in general Ex. Which student likes color blue?
Follow simple two - step directions and instructions with some details.
8. Relay the message(Broken phone): Divide the class in two teams and line up. The teacher says a statement/phrase to the first student in each group, those students have to say to the person next to them and continue until the end. The team who has the correct or close statement is the winner.
9. Movie clip: The teacher gives questions to answer from a video.
High intermediate
Identify key information/details in a description
10. Song gap-fill: The teacher provides the lyrics of a song with missing words, then plays the song and students complete.
11. Listen for lies: Read a story. Then, ask a student to read the story but doing some changes the rest of the students try to remember or identify which are the words were changed.
Distinguish between facts and opinions
12. Read a story or play an audio, ask to students write about what they heard facts or opinions. Ex. Pizza with ham is horrible. Fact or opinion? Is an opinion
